It simplifies the process and makes things fair. Or, they could negotiate the benefits individually. If you are part of a company that wishes to negotiate and you are going to get laid off, it pays to do some research and maybe even consult with a lawyer to help you do the negotiations. Your goal is to come up with a benefits package that is fair. If you do not want to hire an attorney, at the very least you will want to look into what is typical for layoff benefits and at least shoot for that.
